Los SALON Book Club: The Limits of Whiteness

Limits of Whiteness.png

The Larissa-over-Sunset (LoS) Salon is hosting a book club on the Limits of Whiteness by Professor Neda Maghbouleh. Neda will be joining us from Toronto, via video chat, to discuss her books’s look at how Iranian-Americans inhabit a particular racial liminal space in contemporary America. While the focus of this book is on Iranian-Americans, it provides lessons on how race is constructed in America, and we welcome discussion from all.

LoS SALON: 3005 Massachusetts

By international law, an embassy is protected under a unique diplomatic immunity status. Since the occupation of the US embassy in Iran in 1980 and the consequent severing of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the former embassy of Iran in Washington, DC has been vacant and abandoned for almost four decades. While in a liminal status, legally, ontologically and symbolically, termites, humidity and dust leave the building in a state of total decay.

Artist and writer, Gelare Khoshgozaran will discuss her work-in-progress, 3005 Massachusetts, a cinematic meditation and research project that positions the abandoned building of the former Iranian embassy as its protagonist.

She solicits the help of salon attendees to try to understand the complications of working as an artist with various institutions and legal complexities surrounding this property.

SALON: Cage-Free Cannabis

America's failed War on Drugs has had a disproportionately destructive impact on communities of color. From police tactics to sentencing minimums, Blacks and Latinos in poor, marginalized, and underserved communities have borne the brunt of this country's effort to get drugs off of the streets.

Now, as marijuana is legalized and as businesses form, entrepreneur Adam Vine believes that some of those profits should go toward repairing the harms caused by the drug war. It is with that intention that he co-founded Cage-Free Cannabis --a company that sells cannabis accessories and donates the proceeds to organizations that work with formerly incarcerated individuals, at-risk youth, and black and brown people who want to create their own businesses.

Adam Vine co-founded Cage-Free Cannabis to repair harms of the War on Drugs and advocate for an equitable cannabis industry. Since launching, Adam has provided cannabis policy recommendations to the City and the County of Los Angeles, as well as to a statewide policy roundtable. The Cage-Free project has so far supported re-entry programs for formerly incarcerated women, youth organizing in Central American immigrant communities, and expungement, job, and resource fairs, among other things.
